Carbon Fiber Sheet Thickness Guide

Pick the right thickness for your part — from 0.1 mm flexures to 50 mm structural plates.

Quick Selection

Which Thickness Should I Use?

We stock and cut carbon fiber sheets from 0.1 mm to 50 mm. Below is a starting point — tell us your load and we'll tune it.

ThicknessTypical UseBest ForNotes
0.1 – 0.2 mm Shims, flexures, decorative laminate skins Drone / RC Very flexible; non-structural layers
0.3 – 0.5 mm Light stiffeners, battery straps, skids Drone Thin, easy to cut, low rigidity
0.5 – 1.0 mm Small drone arms, covers, brackets Drone Good stiffness-to-weight for mini parts
1.0 – 2.0 mm FPV frames, RC link plates, mounts Drone / RC Most common drone & RC range
2.0 – 3.0 mm RC shock towers, chassis braces, UAV arms RC Crash-resistant stiffness
3.0 – 5.0 mm RC chassis plates, robot booms, jigs RC / Robot Heavy-duty structural
5.0 – 10 mm Fixtures, covers, robotics bases Industrial Solid or cored
10 – 20 mm Tooling, machine guards, load parts Industrial Often cored for flatness
20 – 50 mm Moulds, heavy fixtures, blocks Industrial Custom lay-up; longer lead

Recommended Starting Points

FPV / Racing Drones

Light frames and arms favor 1.0–3.0 mm twill plates. Battery straps and skids use 0.5–1.0 mm flex cuts. Aim for the thinnest part that survives a crash.

RC Cars & Crawlers

Chassis plates and shock towers run 2.0–4.0 mm. Braces and link plates 1.5–2.5 mm. Stiffness beats weight here, so go thicker than drone parts.

Robotics & UAV Components

Mounting plates 1.5–3.0 mm; arms and booms 2.0–5.0 mm. Consider a sandwich (honeycomb/aluminium core) above 6 mm for flatness.

Industrial & Structural

Jigs, fixtures and covers use 3.0–10 mm. For large-span or load-bearing parts, 10–50 mm solid or cored plates, often with metal inserts.

Material Choices

Weave, Finish & Tolerance

Weave

Plain weave — highest stability, best for skins and visual parts. Twill 2×2 — easier to drape over curves, the RC/drone favourite. Unidirectional — max strength along one axis for arms and beams.

Surface Finish

Gloss for show parts; matte / peel-ply for bonding surfaces (better epoxy adhesion). Specify per side — e.g. gloss top / matte bottom.

Tolerance & Edge

CNC-cut parts hold ±0.1 mm on holes and contours. Raw sheet thickness tolerance ±0.05 mm typical. Edges can be sealed or clear-coated on request.

Still unsure? Send your drawing or a photo of the part — we'll recommend thickness, weave and finish, and cut a sample so you can validate before a full run.
